One of the most frequent tools we use in Physiotherapy is called the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NRPS). We ask patients to rate their level of pain on a scale of 0 to 10. With zero being no pain at all and ten meaning the worst possible pain you could feel. Although this is a subjective measure, as only you can determine how you feel, it is a very important tool that we use to determine course of treatment.
We all experience physical pain in our lives; it’s how you will cope with it that determines your ability to work through it.
There are two types of coping strategies:
- Passive Coping Strategies
- Active Coping Strategies.
In the clinic we find some patients use passive coping strategies, which involves a fear of pain and flare ups that leads to avoidance and fear of movements. This kind of thinking will lead to avoidance and fear of functional activities that sadly will stop patients from doing the things they love. They may become reliant on healthcare providers to find the “problem” and then to find the “cure”.
In these cases, the patient could become reliant on medications and special gadgets to mask the pain thus bringing them to the vicious cycle of persistent pain.
In Physiotherapy and Kinesiology visits, our goal is to steer patients towards Active Coping Strategies!
Your Proactive Pain Management At The Clinic
At the clinic we will work with you to develop a plan that incorporates Active Coping Strategies. This involves educating you to understand pain, why we experience it and to help you to no longer fear pain and flare ups. We will help you to set goals and promote a positive attitude. Physiotherapy and Kinesiology involves exercises and putting your joints and muscles through movements. These movements are paced. We will ultimately progress you to paced functional movements that help you get back to your life.
If you take anything from this blog, remember that recovery from pain and disability is impossible unless you start moving with a gentle exercise program. With the Niagara Falls Physiotherapy team at WIN Health Solutions our goal is to get you back moving and enjoying the activities you love.
